Dilophosaurus was a genus of early carnivorous theropod dinosaurs of the Averostra group, living in North America during the early Jurassic. The presumably only valid species is Dilophosaurus wetherilli.
The first fossils of Dilophosaurus were found in 1942. The animal was first named Megalosaurus wetherilli. After a new find in 1964, the genus was given its own name Dilophosaurus, the "two-crested saurian" in 1970. Subsequently, more skeletons were found so that the scientists got a good picture of the structure of the animal. The second species, Dilophosaurus sinensis, named in 1983, is believed to be a completely different dinosaur.
