Tyrannosaurus is a genus of carnivorous theropod dinosaurs. Tyrannosaurus belongs to the group of Tyrannosauridae and lived about seventy to sixty-six million years ago, during the late Cretaceous period, in the western part of what is now North America.
Tyrannosaurus was a giant carnivore that could grow up to fourteen meters long and weigh eight tons. It walked on strong, high hind legs with its horizontal, broad body balanced by a short, heavy tail. The front legs were very small. The prey was attacked with the large, heavy-set head. Equipped with long teeth and heavy muscles, the jaws could exert an enormous biting force. Tyrannosaurus preyed on large herbivorous dinosaurs, some of which, like Triceratops and Ankylosaurus, were well defended and had to be taken out quickly with a few powerful bites.
