Papo Dinosaurs Brachiosaurus 55030

The first fossil of Brachiosaurus was discovered in 1883 in the United States. The animal got its name in 1903, which means "arm saurian", because of the very long upper arm. The first named type species is Brachiosaurus altithorax. Between 1909 and 1912, much more complete skeletons were found in German East Africa. A second species was named for this in 1914: Brachiosaurus brancai. A skeleton was set up in Berlin, still the largest dinosaur skeleton on display in the world. That made Brachiosaurus one of the best known dinosaurs to the general public. Two more species were later named: B. atalaiensis and B. nougaredi, but these are now understood to be other dinosaurs. In recent years more and more scientists find that B. brancai is also a completely different animal than B. altithorax. They therefore use a separate genus name for the African species: Giraffatitan.
