The militia or the marksmen's guild was a local militia founded in the Middle Ages, consisting of civilians, to protect and defend their city or village in the event of an external attack by, for example, roving bands of robbers or foreign armies, and to maintain order internally in the event of riots, fire or prominent visit. The core tasks of the militia were thus comparable to those of contemporary law and order and emergency services such as the police, fire brigade and the army: guarding and preserving order, peace and safety of the citizens. The name militia probably comes from shooting, rather than sheltering.
