Velociraptor is a genus of carnivorous theropod dinosaurs, belonging to the Maniraptora group, that lived in the area of present-day Mongolia during the Late Cretaceous about 75 million years ago.
The first Velociraptor fossil was discovered in 1923. In 1924 the genus got its name meaning "swift robber". Then the type species Velociraptor mongoliensis was named. In 2008 a second species was described: V. osmolskae. A dozen specimens of Velociraptor have been excavated, including quite complete ones, so that scientists could get a good idea of what the animal looked like.
